USB-C to HDMI Cable vs Adapter vs Hub: Which One to Buy

For most Android phones, a plain USB-C to HDMI cable is the simplest and most reliable choice: one cable, no extra parts, and it works with any phone that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. An adapter makes sense if you already own HDMI cables or need a specific length, and a hub with Power Delivery is worth it only if you need to charge the phone during long sessions. Here is how the three differ and what the specs on the box actually mean.
Before you buy anything
All three options depend on the same thing: your phone must support DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C. Every USB-C to HDMI product has a converter chip that turns DisplayPort into HDMI, but none of them can produce video from a phone that does not output it. Check your model in the compatibility database first. If it is not supported, save your money and use the app's Wi-Fi Browser Cast instead.
Option 1: USB-C to HDMI cable
A single cable with USB-C on one end and a full-size HDMI plug on the other. The converter chip lives inside the HDMI plug.
Good for: most people, hotel rooms, travel, anyone who wants the fewest parts.
- One connection at each end, so fewer places for a loose joint.
- Typically 1 to 3 metres long.
- No charging while in use.
- The length is fixed; if you need 5 metres you need a different product.
Look for "4K 60Hz" and "HDMI 2.0" on the box. A cable that only says "4K" is usually 4K at 30Hz.
Option 2: USB-C to HDMI adapter
A short dongle with a USB-C plug on one end and an HDMI socket on the other. You add your own HDMI cable.
Good for: people who already have HDMI cables, long runs, or a setup where the HDMI cable is already routed to the TV.
- Small enough to leave on a keyring.
- Works with any length of HDMI cable within HDMI's own limits.
- Two joints instead of one, so slightly more to go wrong.
- Same DP Alt Mode requirement as the cable.
The same "HDMI 2.0, 4K 60Hz" rule applies. Also check the HDMI cable you pair it with; an old cable from a 1080p era set-top box may not carry 4K 60Hz cleanly.
Option 3: USB-C hub with HDMI and Power Delivery
A multiport box with HDMI, one or more USB-A ports, sometimes a card reader, and a USB-C Power Delivery input for a charger.
Good for: long sessions where the phone needs charging, Samsung DeX with a wired keyboard and mouse, or a semi-permanent desk setup.
- Charges the phone while it outputs video, as long as your charger is plugged into the hub.
- USB-A ports take keyboards, mice, and flash drives, useful in DeX.
- Bulkier and more expensive.
- Many hubs share the USB-C lanes between the display and the USB 3 ports. On these, the display drops to 4K 30Hz whenever USB 3 is active. Some hubs have a switch or a mode for 4K 60Hz with USB 2.0 speeds on the other ports.
- Some hubs need the charger connected before they output video. If the picture only appears with power attached, that is the hub's design.
For a hub, look for "Power Delivery passthrough" with at least 60W input and "HDMI 2.0" or "4K 60Hz" in the spec.
What "Thunderbolt" on the box means
Thunderbolt 3, 4, and 5 use the USB-C connector and are common on laptops. Phones do not support Thunderbolt. This matters in two ways:
- A Thunderbolt cable is also a good USB-C cable, so it works with a USB-C to HDMI adapter if you need a longer USB-C leg.
- A Thunderbolt-only dock will not work with a phone, because it expects a Thunderbolt host. Some docks are advertised as Thunderbolt but fall back to USB-C with DP Alt Mode; those do work. If the box says "Thunderbolt and USB-C compatible" or lists DP Alt Mode, it is fine. If it says Thunderbolt only, skip it.
4K 30Hz vs 4K 60Hz
This is the spec that separates a good product from a frustrating one.
- HDMI 1.4 carries 4K at 30Hz. Many older and cheaper adapters use an HDMI 1.4 converter chip and are advertised simply as "4K".
- HDMI 2.0 carries 4K at 60Hz. This is what you want.
- Your phone sets its own ceiling. Most phones with DP Alt Mode over a USB 3.x port can output 4K 60Hz to a plain cable. Through a hub that keeps USB 3 active, the phone gets fewer DisplayPort lanes and may fall to 4K 30Hz.
- The TV's HDMI port must accept 4K 60Hz. On some TVs you need to enable a setting such as Input Signal Plus (Samsung), HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color (LG), or Enhanced format (Sony) for that port.
For photos, 30Hz is fine. For video and anything with scrolling, 60Hz is noticeably smoother. The 4K 60Hz guide goes deeper.
HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1
HDMI 2.1 adds bandwidth for 4K at 120Hz and 8K, plus features aimed at game consoles. No Android phone outputs any of that over USB-C. An HDMI 2.1 cable does no harm and is fully backwards compatible, but it buys you nothing on a phone. Do not pay extra for it, and do not assume a 2.1 label fixes a 30Hz problem; the limit is in the adapter's converter chip, not the cable after it.
Length limits
- USB-C to HDMI cables: 1 to 3 metres is standard and works at 4K 60Hz. Longer single cables exist but quality varies.
- Adapter plus HDMI cable: a good HDMI 2.0 cable holds 4K 60Hz to about 5 metres. Beyond that, expect flicker or dropouts unless you use an active HDMI cable.
- USB-C extension cables: avoid them. The high-speed lanes used for video do not tolerate extra length well, and most extensions are USB 2.0 only.
If you need a long run, put a short adapter at the phone and run the length on the HDMI side.
What to avoid
- DisplayLink adapters. These need a driver and are made for laptops. On Android they are unreliable.
- MHL adapters. Made for old micro-USB phones. Not USB-C.
- Anything that says "charging cable" with a picture of a TV on the packaging.
- Products with no HDMI version or refresh rate listed at all.
- "USB-C to HDMI" cables that are actually USB-C to USB-C with an HDMI-shaped plug. They exist and they do nothing.
