USB-C to HDMI 4K 60Hz on Android: What Actually Determines It

Whether you get 4K at 60Hz over USB-C to HDMI on Android depends on three things: the DisplayPort version and number of lanes your phone outputs, the HDMI version of your cable or adapter, and what the TV's HDMI input accepts. Most phones that support video output can reach 4K 60Hz with an HDMI 2.0 adapter and a 4K TV, but 1080p is often the better choice for smooth, reliable playback.

The chain: phone, adapter, TV

Every link has a ceiling, and the lowest one wins.

The phone

Video leaves the phone as a DisplayPort signal over the USB-C port's high-speed lanes. Two things matter:

  • DisplayPort version. DP 1.2 with four lanes carries 4K at 60Hz. DP 1.4 carries more. Most phones with video output use one of these.
  • Lane count. The USB-C port has four high-speed lanes. A plain USB-C to HDMI cable takes all four for video. A hub that keeps USB 3 running on its ports leaves only two for video, which on DP 1.2 means 4K at 30Hz.

Samsung DeX supports output up to 4K on recent Galaxy flagships. Other phones rarely publish a maximum, so the practical answer is: a USB 3.x port with DP Alt Mode generally does 4K 60Hz to a plain cable. If your phone is not on the compatibility database at all, none of this applies, because there is no video signal to begin with.

The cable or adapter

The converter chip inside the cable or adapter sets the HDMI version.

  • HDMI 1.4 chips carry 4K at 30Hz. Products advertised only as "4K" are usually this.
  • HDMI 2.0 chips carry 4K at 60Hz. Look for "4K 60Hz" or "HDMI 2.0" on the box.
  • HDMI 2.1 adds nothing for a phone. No Android phone outputs 4K 120Hz over USB-C.

If you use an adapter with a separate HDMI cable, that cable must be rated for 4K 60Hz as well. An old cable from a 1080p set-top box may work at 1080p and fail at 4K. The cable buying guide lists what to check.

The TV

The TV's HDMI input has to accept a 4K 60Hz signal, and on many TVs it does not by default.

  • Samsung: Settings, General, External Device Manager, Input Signal Plus, turn on for the port you use.
  • LG: Settings, General, Additional Settings, HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color, turn on for the port.
  • Sony: Settings, Watching TV, External inputs, HDMI signal format, set to Enhanced.
  • Older 4K TVs often have only one or two ports that support full 4K 60Hz. The manual or the port label will say.

With the setting off, the TV either drops to 30Hz or shows nothing.

How to see what you are actually getting

Android does not show the output mode in an obvious place. The TV usually does. Press Info or Display on the TV remote while the phone is connected; most TVs show the incoming resolution and refresh rate, such as 3840x2160 60Hz. On Samsung phones in DeX, Settings, Connected devices, Samsung DeX, shows the current resolution.

1080p or 4K in the app

The app lets you choose the output resolution for casting. The choice is not about which number is bigger.

Pick 4K when:

  • You are showing photos on a 4K TV. Photos from any modern phone have far more than 4K of detail, and the difference on a large screen is visible.
  • The cable, adapter, and TV are all known to handle 4K 60Hz.
  • The phone stays cool. Encoding a 4K output for a long time warms the phone.

Pick 1080p when:

  • The videos were recorded at 1080p. Upscaling them to 4K on the phone gains nothing over letting the TV upscale.
  • The TV is 1080p, which includes most hotel TVs.
  • 4K flickers, drops out, or takes a long time to appear.
  • You want the phone to run cooler and use less battery over a long evening.
  • You are using a hub that shares lanes, where 4K would fall to 30Hz anyway.

On video, most people cannot tell 1080p from 4K from a sofa. On a slideshow of photos they can. Choose accordingly.

Why 4K sometimes flickers

Flicker, brief black screens, or a signal that comes and goes are almost always a bandwidth problem. 4K 60Hz sits near the limit of HDMI 2.0, and anything marginal in the chain shows up here first.

  1. The HDMI cable is too long or too cheap. Try 2 metres or less.
  2. The adapter is HDMI 1.4 and is being pushed to a mode it cannot hold. Replace it with an HDMI 2.0 rated adapter.
  3. The TV port's full-bandwidth mode is off. Enable it using the paths above.
  4. The USB-C plug is not fully seated or the port has lint in it. Take off the case and clean the port.
  5. The adapter is overheating. Small adapters get warm at 4K 60Hz over a long session. Give it airflow.
  6. The phone is thermally throttling. Lower the brightness, close background apps, or drop to 1080p.

If the problem vanishes at 1080p, it is bandwidth, and one of the first three fixes will solve it. If it persists at 1080p, look at the plug, the port, and the troubleshooting guide.

HDR expectations

Keep them low. Your phone can record HDR video and display it beautifully on its own screen. Sending that HDR to the TV over USB-C is another matter.

  • Most Android phones output SDR over DisplayPort Alt Mode. HDR videos are tone mapped to SDR before they leave the phone.
  • A few phones and DeX modes may negotiate HDR with specific TVs, but this is inconsistent and undocumented.
  • The TV may show an HDR badge when it detects any wide-colour signal, which does not mean the content is being rendered in HDR.

If HDR on the big screen matters, copy the file to a USB stick and play it in the TV's media player, or use a streaming box. For photos and standard video, SDR over the cable looks excellent.

Refresh rate vs frame rate

60Hz output does not make video smoother than it was recorded. A 30fps video shows each frame twice at 60Hz, and a 24fps film has slight judder, exactly as it does on any 60Hz display. The refresh rate matters most for scrolling and for the phone's own interface in mirroring or DeX. For photos it does not matter at all.

What to do next

Buy an HDMI 2.0 rated cable or adapter, enable the full-bandwidth setting on the TV port, and try 4K on a photo slideshow. If it holds, keep it for photos.
